Winston Smith’s Studio Fallout, in collaboration with famed record label, Alternative Tentacles, announce The Bat Show, a tribute to Winston Smith’s legendary bat logo and the inspired re-interpretations of his iconic design by artists throughout the decades.
In celebration of the grand opening of Studio Fallout and the indelible mark that the art of Winston Smith has made on the aesthetic of counterculture music over the decades, Winston has teamed up with one of his most infamous collaborators, Jello Biafra and his record label Alternative Tentacles. Comprising rare creative works in the Alternative Tentacles permanent collection and new works by a select few curated artists, The Bat Show aims to celebrate San Francisco’s history of counterculture and two of its giants of influence within that culture; Winston Smith, and Alternative Tentacles. Several new works by renowned artists, curated especially for this show will also be on display alongside classic works in the Alternative Tentacles collection.
Artist Winston Smith recently reflected about his iconic and ubiquitous bat design. “It was based on a chicken-scratch rendering that Biafra suggested to me way back, over 40+ years ago” and “a set of cartoons that I would pass round the classroom when I was around 9 or 10 years old.” His appreciation for what his design continues to inspire hasn’t waned, saying that “it has been very gratifying to see the totally cool re-interpretations of my basic bat design as revered by artists and fans over the last 40 years.”
Vendors Destroy Art, Punk Majesty, Days of Fury, and Out of Sight Records will be on site for the grand opening and duration of the exhibit. Combined they carry a wide array of counterculture inspired clothing, art, and accessories.
